in box

nearly night or Tuesday
swallowed whole the light of the earth
at the equinox
and then the reports come in
at the office

at the water’s selvage in the shadow of the tottering palms
none to give or refuse our outstretched alms

fortunately again

we do not meet here
on the Q.T. there is a balcony above the city
that looks down on the prospect below the street you know the other streets
and avenues and byways
and the journeymen of highways

the sages lived here a place of foxes
at an angle of Capri pants on the deck chairs flying up and down with the breeze

christopher mulrooney has written symphony (The Moon Publishing & Printing) and jamboree (Turf Lane Press).
